Summary

This study found elevated nitric oxide (NO) production in depressed patients compared to controls. These findings suggest a link between increased NO and the pathophysiology of depression.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if nitric oxide (NO) production is elevated in patients diagnosed with depression.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma nitrate levels, a marker for NO production, were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography.
  • Measurements were taken from 17 depressed patients, 6 patients with anxiety disorders, and 12 healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • Depressed patients exhibited significantly higher plasma nitrate concentrations compared to both anxiety patients (P<0.05) and healthy controls (P<0.01).
