Summary

Radical cystectomy is a safe and effective treatment for elderly patients with invasive bladder cancer. Age alone should not prevent older adults from receiving this life-saving procedure.

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of radical cystectomy in elderly patients (75 years and older) with invasive bladder cancer.
  • To determine if advanced age is a contraindication for cystectomy.

  • Review of existing data on cystectomy outcomes in elderly versus younger patients.
  • Analysis of morbidity and mortality risks associated with cystectomy in advanced age.

Main Results:

  • Well-selected elderly patients, including those 80 years and older, do not face significantly higher risks of complications or death from cystectomy compared to younger individuals.
  • Cystectomy in older adults can be safely performed with a multidisciplinary team approach and heightened perioperative care.
