Ambient temperature significantly influences rat responses to hypoxia. Lower temperatures prevent hyperthermia and may protect the brain from pathology during oxygen deprivation.

  • Hypoxia abolishes circadian rhythms of body temperature and activity in rats acclimated to 29°C.
  • Hypoxia also induces brain pathology and significant changes in body temperature and activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of ambient temperature (T(a)) in hypoxic responses.
  • To determine how T(a) affects body temperature (T(b)) and activity (L(a)) during hypoxia.

Main Methods:

  • Rats were acclimated to 25°C or 21°C.
  • Body temperature and activity were monitored via telemetry for 48 hours on air, followed by 63 hours on 10% oxygen.

  • Hypoxic body temperature decline was inversely proportional to T(a).
