  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Zenker's diverticulum is a pharyngeal outpouching.
  • Surgical intervention is necessary for symptomatic cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare diverticulectomy and diverticulopexy for Zenker's diverticulum treatment.
  • Evaluate outcomes in a cohort of 39 patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, nonrandomized study.
  • 23 men and 17 women (mean age 72) underwent surgery.
  • Procedures included cricopharyngeal myotomy with diverticulum suspension or diverticulectomy.

Main Results:

  • No mortality observed.
  • Low morbidity: fistula, pneumonia, transient dysphonia, hematoma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Excellent results in 36 patients, good in 3.
  • Conclusions:

    • Cricopharyngeal myotomy with diverticulopexy is suitable for geriatric patients.
    • Diverticulectomy is recommended for diverticula >6 cm or in younger patients.
    • Diverticulectomy may reduce the risk of malignant transformation.
