Background:

Schizophrenia incidence varies across ethnic groups.
Socioeconomic factors and ethnicity are linked to mental health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To review and interpret epidemiologic research on ethnic disadvantage and schizophrenia.
To explore the relationship between societal position, life planning, executive function, and schizophrenia risk.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive search of the research literature was conducted.
Analysis of seventeen population-based studies from the UK and Netherlands (1967-1997).

Main Results:

Studies indicate significantly higher schizophrenia incidence rates (1.7 to 13.2 times) in disadvantaged immigrant populations compared to native-born majority groups.
Disadvantaged societal positions may impede the executive function abilities required for life-planning, potentially increasing schizophrenia vulnerability.

Conclusions:

The developmental challenge of formulating a life plan, particularly for disadvantaged ethnic minorities, is a potential factor in schizophrenia etiology.
Further research on executive function and life-planning challenges could offer insights into schizophrenia prevention strategies.
