A woman with a history of lung removal developed a large aortic aneurysm. Emergency surgery was needed to repair the pseudoaneurysm, which was caused by Aspergillus fumigatus infection.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pulmonary Medicine

Background:

  • A 31-year-old female with a history of left pneumonectomy for tuberculosis presented with respiratory distress.
  • Pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia and aspiration pneumonia preceded the current presentation.

Observation:

  • Imaging revealed a large aortic arch aneurysm and a filling defect in the descending thoracic aorta.
  • The postpneumonectomy space was filled by a massive pseudoaneurysm or contained rupture.

Findings:

  • Emergency aortic arch reconstruction was performed.
  • Pathologic and microbiological examination identified Aspergillus fumigatus and active inflammation.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare complication of Aspergillus infection in a post-pneumonectomy patient.
