Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Compressive bandages are commonly used after ear surgery.
  • These bandages carry potential risks and complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the necessity of compressive head bandages after ear surgery.
  • To determine if pressure bandages prevent complications such as hematoma or wound infection.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, randomized, controlled study.
  • 420 patients undergoing middle ear or mastoid surgery were randomized into pressure bandage and no-pressure bandage groups.
  • Complications were monitored through careful follow-up.

Main Results:

  • No instances of hematoma, wound infection, or other wound complications occurred in either group.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The pressure bandage group experienced bruising (3 patients) and skin erythema (70 patients).
  • The no-pressure bandage group reported no bruising or erythema.
  • Conclusions:

    • Compressive bandages are not required after uncomplicated ear surgery.
    • The use of pressure bandages after ear surgery can be abandoned.
    • Omitting pressure bandages does not increase the risk of complications.
