Rhabdomyosarcoma can rarely occur in the sellar region. This case highlights a primary intrasellar embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, emphasizing its consideration in sellar tumor diagnoses.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare malignancy typically originating in soft tissues.
  • Intrasellar tumors are uncommon, with pituitary adenomas being the most frequent.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old male presented with headache, abducent nerve palsy, and visual disturbance.
  • Imaging revealed a sellar tumor invading the left cavernous sinus.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with myoblastic features.
  • Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for desmin, myoglobin, and alpha-smooth muscle actin.
  • No other tumor sites were detected, suggesting a primary intrasellar origin.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma should be included in the differential diagnosis for primary intrasellar neoplasms.
  • Multidisciplinary treatment involving surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy achieved complete remission.
