Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Facial Nerve Surgery

Background:

  • Frey's syndrome, characterized by gustatory sweating, is a known complication following parotidectomy.
  • The reported incidence and effective treatment strategies for Frey's syndrome vary in existing literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of scopolamine ointment in treating Frey's syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 372 parotidectomies performed between 1980 and 1994.
  • Assessment of symptom development and treatment outcomes in 86 patients diagnosed with Frey's syndrome.

Main Results:

  • Frey's syndrome developed in 23.5% (86/364) of patients post-parotidectomy.
  • Scopolamine ointment treatment in 35 patients showed limited improvement (9 cases) and was not significantly better than no treatment (7/20 improved).
  • Average follow-up was 18 months for symptom development and 20-25 months for treatment outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Frey's syndrome remains a challenging post-parotidectomy complication.
  • Current evidence suggests scopolamine ointment is not a significantly effective treatment for Frey's syndrome.
