Purpose of the Study:

  • Retrospective study of general surgical and injury cases admitted to a zonal hospital over 1.5 years.
  • Inclusion of patients who developed medical illness secondary to surgical cause, anesthesia, or surgery.

  • Out of 1416 total cases, 37 patients (excluding those with prior illness) were analyzed.
  • Medical problems occurred in 1.05% of general surgery cases and 4.43% of injury cases.
  • Weapon-related injuries led to organ injury, fat embolism, and sepsis; soft tissue injuries caused renal failure; vehicle accidents resulted in fat embolism and aspiration. Two deaths were due to post-anesthetic complications.

Conclusions:

  • Medical problems are significantly more frequent in injury-related surgical cases compared to general surgery.
  • The nature of the injury is a key determinant of the medical complications encountered.
  • Emergency surgery and injury severity contribute to increased mortality and morbidity, highlighting the need for specialized study.
