Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Colorectal Diseases
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Collagenous colitis (CC) is a rare colonic subepithelial disease.
  • Therapeutic outcomes for CC have not been systematically described.
  • This study analyzes treatment responses in a cohort of CC patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically describe therapeutic outcomes in patients with collagenous colitis.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of various treatment modalities for CC.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 26 patients diagnosed with collagenous colitis between 1991 and 1994.
  • Review of patient demographics, symptoms, therapies, and outcomes.
  • Defined outcomes: Complete Remission (CR), Partial Remission (PR), Failure, and Relapse.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 22 of 26 patients responded to therapy; one had spontaneous remission.
  • 12 patients maintained remission with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and/or antidiarrheals.
  • Six patients required prednisone for sustained remission; two failed all therapies.

Conclusions:

  • Collagenous colitis is a treatable condition in the majority of patients.
  • Recommended initial therapy: antidiarrheals, followed by 5-ASA.
  • Prednisone is indicated for refractory cases, with subsequent attempts to taper medication.
