Summary

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss recovery is common, with about two-thirds of patients experiencing improvement. The severity of hearing loss is the primary factor influencing prognosis in these cases.

Background:

  • Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to undefined criteria and unknown pathogenesis.
  • High spontaneous recovery rates complicate the evaluation of treatment efficacy for SSNHL.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical characteristics of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
  • To identify prognostic factors impacting hearing recovery in SSNHL patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 56 patients with idiopathic SSNHL admitted between 1994 and 1998.
  • Evaluation of clinical data, audiograms, and audiological investigations.

Main Results:

  • The average age of onset was 43.7 years; 92.9% experienced unilateral hearing loss.
