Summary

Sodium nitroprusside, an antihypertensive drug, did not prevent memory loss from electroconvulsive shocks (ECS) in rats. However, it improved cognitive function in both treated and untreated groups, suggesting a broader effect on memory.

Background:

  • Electroconvulsive shocks (ECS) can cause retrograde amnesia.
  • Verapamil and felodipine have previously been shown to attenuate ECS-induced amnesia.
  • Sodium nitroprusside is an antihypertensive drug that does not affect calcium channels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of sodium nitroprusside on ECS-induced retrograde amnesia.
  • To determine if sodium nitroprusside, unlike calcium channel blockers, can attenuate memory impairment after ECS.
  • To explore the role of nitric oxide mechanisms in cognitive function and ECS effects.

Main Methods:

  • Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study.
  • Sodium nitroprusside (0.5 mg/kg) or saline was administered 3 minutes before daily true or sham ECS.

    • Sodium nitroprusside appears to have a general enhancing effect on cognitive functions rather than specifically counteracting ECS-induced amnesia.
