Unusual chromosomal changes in polycythaemia vera.

L Gras, D C Cowling, J Sullivan

    The Medical Journal of Australia
    |January 11, 1975
    PubMed
    Summary

Two polycythaemia vera patients had 48 chromosomes detected via bone marrow culture. This chromosomal abnormality was observed upon hospital admission, with no signs of blastic transformation in either case.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Cytogenetics

    Background:

    • Polycythaemia vera is a myeloproliferative neoplasm.
    • Chromosomal abnormalities are common in hematologic malignancies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate chromosomal counts in polycythaemia vera patients.
    • To identify any consistent numerical chromosomal changes at diagnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Direct bone marrow culture was performed for 13 polycythaemia vera cases.
    • Chromosome analysis was conducted on cultured bone marrow cells.

    Main Results:

    • A consistent count of 48 chromosomes was identified in 2 out of 13 patients.
    • These two patients did not exhibit blastic transformation at the time of diagnosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Numerical chromosomal aberrations may be present at diagnosis in polycythaemia vera.
    • Further research is needed to understand the significance of 48 chromosomes in polycythaemia vera.
