Summary

Metabolic disturbances, specifically higher fasting glucose and uric acid levels, are linked to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). These findings suggest a role for carbohydrate and uric acid metabolism in POAG pathogenesis.

Background:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) pathogenesis is not fully understood.
  • Metabolic diseases are increasingly suspected to influence POAG development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential role of metabolic disturbances in POAG.
  • To examine specific metabolic parameters in POAG patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum metabolic parameters were assessed in 49 POAG patients.
  • A control group of 72 age- and sex-matched individuals without glaucoma was included.
  • Fasting serum glucose and uric acid levels were key parameters measured.

Main Results:

  • POAG patients exhibited significantly higher fasting serum glucose (117+/-17 mg/dl) compared to controls (105+/-11 mg/dl, p=0.05).
