Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Urology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Constipation and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are prevalent in the elderly.
  • Existing research suggests a potential link between rectal and bladder dysfunction, though studies often focus on younger populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of alleviating constipation on LUTS in elderly individuals.
  • To assess the broader effects on mood, sexual function, and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective cohort study involving 52 elderly patients (65-89 years) with chronic constipation and LUTS.
  • Data collection included questionnaires on bowel/urinary symptoms, sexual function, and mood, alongside urinalysis and abdominal ultrasound over a 4-month follow-up period.
  • Constipation was treated medically during the study.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Treatment significantly increased weekly defecations and reduced time spent on the toilet.
  • Patients reported fewer episodes of urinary urgency, frequency, and burning sensation.
  • Improvements were observed in urinary stream, residual urine volume, and bacteriuria events.
  • Positive impacts on sexual activity and mood were also noted.

Conclusions:

  • Medical relief of chronic constipation leads to significant improvement in LUTS among the elderly.
  • Addressing constipation positively influences patients' mood, sexual activity, and overall quality of life.
