Background:

  • Hydramnios, characterized by excessive amniotic fluid, poses risks to both mother and fetus.
  • Symptomatic hydramnios necessitates effective management strategies to prevent complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of indomethacin in treating symptomatic hydramnios.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of twelve patients with symptomatic hydramnios received indomethacin at a dosage of 2.2-3.0 mg/kg/day.
  • Treatment initiation occurred at a mean gestational age of 31.17 ± 7.94 weeks and continued for 3.74 ± 2.3 weeks.

Main Results:

  • Eleven patients (91.7%) showed subjective and objective improvement.
  • Pregnancies were prolonged by an average of 4.6 ± 3.1 weeks, with five term deliveries and six favorable perinatal outcomes.
  • No maternal complications were reported; however, four cases with fetal anomalies resulted in stillbirth or neonatal death.

Conclusions:

  • Indomethacin is an effective therapeutic agent for hydramnios management.
  • The drug demonstrated efficacy in preventing hydramnios-related complications.
  • Indomethacin offers a safe and effective treatment option for symptomatic hydramnios.
