Summary

Iron-deficiency anemia in infants did not show significant auditory dysfunction via brainstem auditory-evoked potentials. Auditory function remained unchanged after iron therapy, suggesting moderate anemia may not impact hearing.

Background:

  • Brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) offer a noninvasive method to assess central nervous system auditory function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of iron-deficiency anemia on auditory functions in infants using BAEPs.
  • To evaluate changes in auditory function before and after iron supplementation.

  • A case-control study involving 20 infants with iron-deficiency anemia and 20 healthy, age-matched controls.
