Summary

Limy bile, a rare gallbladder condition, affects 0.27% of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Preoperative diagnosis is not essential, as surgical treatment remains straightforward.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hepatobiliary Surgery

Background:

  • Limy bile is a rare condition characterized by calcium carbonate precipitate in the gallbladder.
  • Gallbladder disease management often involves cholecystectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Determine the incidence of limy bile.
  • Analyze patient characteristics and preoperative imaging.
  • Evaluate surgical treatment for limy bile.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1800 laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
  • Data collected from March 1990 to March 1998.
  • Inclusion criteria: symptomatic gallbladder disease.

Main Results:

  • Five cases (0.27%) of limy bile identified.
  • Patients aged 42-66, predominantly female.
  • Ultrasound unable to differentiate limy bile from gallstones; X-rays suggestive.
  • Surgery was not more complex than standard cholecystectomy.

Conclusions:

  • Limy bile is a rare finding with low incidence.
  • Preoperative diagnosis does not alter surgical approach.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe and effective treatment.
