Accidental docetaxel extravasation in cancer patients was managed with saline, hypothermia, and topical dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). This treatment prevented severe tissue damage, with only mild, late-onset dermatitis observed.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Docetaxel extravasation is a serious complication of chemotherapy.
  • Prompt management is crucial to prevent tissue necrosis and long-term damage.

Observation:

  • An accidental intravenous docetaxel extravasation occurred in a cancer patient.
  • The affected area was treated with subcutaneous saline, topical dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), hypothermia, corticosteroids, and diclofenac.

Findings:

  • Immediate dermatitis resolved within 24 hours.
  • Late-onset dermatitis with brown discoloration and skin hyperplasia developed.
  • No surgical intervention was required.

Implications:

  • Isotonic saline, topical DMSO, and local hypothermia may effectively mitigate docetaxel-induced extravasation injury.
