Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Mycology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Dermatophytosis in newborns and infants is considered uncommon.
  • Tinea capitis is more prevalent than tinea faciei in this age group.

Observation:

  • A 2-month-old infant presented with facial lesions including erythematous patches, papules, pustules, eyebrow rarefaction, and partial eyelash loss.
  • Mycological examination confirmed infection with Trichophyton rubrum.
  • Lesion spread was attributed to prior topical corticosteroid use.

Findings:

  • The case describes an unusual presentation of tinea faciei in an infant.
  • Differential diagnoses considered were seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis with impetigo, candidiasis, and bacterial folliculitis.
  • Interhuman transmission from a relative was the likely source of infection.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering dermatophytosis in infant facial rashes, even when rare.
  • Prompt diagnosis and appropriate antifungal treatment are crucial for resolution.
  • Understanding transmission routes, such as familial contact, aids in prevention.
