Saline washing increased Eustachian tube opening pressure in guinea pigs, suggesting a surfactant

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Physiology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • The Eustachian tube regulates middle ear pressure.
    • Its function can be influenced by surface-active agents.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of saline washing on Eustachian tube opening pressure.
    • To explore the role of surface-active agents in Eustachian tube function.

    Main Methods:

    • 15 fresh guinea pig temporal bones were used.
    • Eustachian tube function was tested before and after saline washing.
    • Opening pressures were measured repeatedly.

    Main Results:

    • Eustachian tube opening pressure significantly increased after saline washing (P < .001).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Variability in opening pressures was observed across ears.
  • A phenomenon of changing opening pressures between trials disappeared after saline washing.
  • Conclusions:

    • Saline washing appears to alter Eustachian tube mechanics.
    • Surface-active agents (surfactants) may play a significant role in Eustachian tube function.
