  • Psychology
  • Dental Practice Management

Background:

  • Dentists experience high rates of burnout, impacting well-being and practice.
  • The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Dutch version (MBI-NL) is a key tool for assessing burnout.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a career counseling program in reducing burnout among general dental practitioners.
  • To explore the impact of self-initiated preventive measures on burnout levels in dentists.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-month career counseling program involving individual and group sessions with cognitive-behavioral techniques.
  • Pre- and post-intervention assessment using the MBI-NL for program participants and a control group.
  • Analysis of burnout scores (emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment) in participants versus non-participants and self-preventing versus non-self-preventing controls.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Program participants showed statistically significant improvements in emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment.
  • Dentists in the control group who implemented self-initiated preventive measures also demonstrated positive changes in emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment.
  • No significant changes in burnout levels were observed in control group dentists who did not undertake preventive actions.

Conclusions:

  • The career counseling program appears to have a beneficial effect on reducing burnout in dentists.
  • Self-initiated preventive strategies are also effective in mitigating burnout among dental practitioners.
  • Further research with reservations is needed to fully confirm the program's impact.
