Summary

Prenatal diagnosis of neonatal ovarian cysts using ultrasonography (US) has increased. Simple cysts can be monitored with US, while complex cysts require surgical intervention to preserve ovarian function.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review ultrasonography (US) data, management, and outcomes of antenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts in newborns.
  • To assess the antenatal and postnatal evolution of neonatal ovarian cysts.
  • To establish appropriate therapeutic guidelines for neonatal ovarian cysts.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 27 cases in 24 consecutive newborns with antenatally diagnosed ovarian cysts.
  • Utilized serial postnatal ultrasonography (US) to monitor cyst evolution.
  • Analyzed surgical management and histological findings for complex cysts.

Main Results:

  • Spontaneous regression of cysts was observed in 10 neonates.
  • Fourteen patients underwent surgery, with 10 having complex and 4 simple cysts.
  • Ultrasonography (US) effectively diagnosed simple cysts but struggled to differentiate benign from malignant complex lesions.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical intervention for neonatal ovarian cysts should be reserved for complex masses.

  • Surgery is indicated for simple cysts if they fail to regress or become symptomatic.
