We introduce OP-a-S notation to improve computer-assisted surgery (CAS) system design by focusing on surgeon interaction. This method enables predictive usability analysis, enhancing ergonomic properties for better surgical tool development.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Surgical Technology

Background:

  • Computer-Assisted Surgery (CAS) systems are increasingly common in medical practice.
  • Current design processes for CAS systems inadequately consider surgeon interaction and ergonomics.
  • A gap exists in user-centered design methodologies for surgical technologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel notation, OP-a-S, for modeling CAS systems.
  • To emphasize an interaction-centered approach in the design of surgical systems.
  • To enable predictive usability and ergonomic analysis during the design phase.

Main Methods:

  • Developed the OP-a-S (Operation-as-System) notation.
  • Adopted an interaction-centered modeling perspective.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Highlighted the connections between the physical and virtual environments in surgical systems.
  • Applied the notation to the retro-design of the CASPER application.
  • Main Results:

    • The OP-a-S notation provides a framework for interaction-centered system modeling.
    • Predictive usability analysis can be effectively performed using OP-a-S models.
    • Ergonomic properties can be systematically evaluated within the OP-a-S framework.

    Conclusions:

    • The OP-a-S notation addresses the need for interaction-focused design in CAS systems.
    • This approach facilitates early identification and mitigation of usability and ergonomic issues.
    • The method enhances the development of more intuitive and effective surgical tools.
