Summary

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is significantly associated with bronchiectasis, a finding supported by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in this study. Bronchiectasis should be recognized as a pulmonary manifestation of SSc.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Rheumatology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease affecting connective tissues.
  • Pulmonary involvement is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in SSc.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of bronchiectasis in patients with SSc using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT).
  • To determine if bronchiectasis is a pulmonary manifestation of SSc.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-two SSc patients underwent pulmonary function testing and HRCT.
  • Statistical analysis included chi-square, Fisher's exact, and t-tests.

Main Results:

  • HRCT revealed ground glass in 68.2%, fibrosis in 40.9%, and cylindrical bronchiectasis in 59.1% of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Bronchiectasis was more frequent in diffuse SSc but not statistically significant.
  • Bronchiectasis showed no correlation with DLCO, ground glass, fibrosis, age, or disease duration.
  • Conclusions:

    • This study suggests a significant association between SSc and bronchiectasis.
    • Bronchiectasis should be considered a pulmonary manifestation of SSc.
    • SSc should be considered a condition that can cause bronchiectasis.
