  • A continuum of care levels was developed.
  • Placement criteria and decision rules were established.
  • Patient needs were assessed using the Colorado Client Assessment Record.

Main Results:

  • Only 10% of current inpatients require continued hospitalization.
  • Over 60% of patients can live independently in the community with support.
  • The planning model demonstrated concurrent validity.

Conclusions:

  • A significant majority of psychiatric hospital patients can be transitioned to community-based care.
  • Further research is needed to validate the effectiveness of recommended care levels in meeting consumer needs within the least restrictive setting.
