Background:

Understanding the multifaceted nature of transgender experiences is crucial.
Previous research has not fully delineated the distinct components of transgenderism.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and define the core components of transgenderism using factor analysis.
To examine differences and overlaps in these components between transvestites and transsexuals.

Main Methods:

Factor analysis was applied to data from 455 transvestites and 61 male-to-female transsexuals.
A 70-item questionnaire and structured interviews were used to collect data on identity, role, sexual behavior, and partner preference.

Main Results:

Five salient factors were identified: Transgender Identity, Role, Sexual Arousal, Androallure, and Pleasure.
Significant differences were found between transvestites and transsexuals across these factors, with varying degrees of overlap.
Second-order analysis revealed Sexual Arousal and Androallure as primary dimensions, underscoring the role of sexual arousal in transgender cognition and behavior.

Conclusions:

The five identified factors provide a comprehensive framework for understanding individual differences in transgender experiences.
Transvestites and transsexuals, despite lifestyle differences, appear to construct their transgender cognition and behavior from similar underlying variables.
Age impacts Androallure and Pleasure in transvestites but not transsexuals, suggesting developmental differences.
