Insights
African American children experience delays in achieving adoption milestones within the child welfare system. Further research is needed to understand and address these disparities in adoption processes.
Area of Science:
- Child Welfare Studies
- Adoption Research
- Health Disparities
Background:
- Children in the public child welfare system often face complex pathways to permanency.
- Adoption is a critical goal for many children removed from their homes.
- Understanding the timeline to adoption is essential for system improvement.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the process and timeline for children in the child welfare system to achieve adoption.
- To identify potential disparities in adoption pathways for different demographic groups.
Main Methods:
- Descriptive and event history analyses were performed.
- The study included 1,550 children in the Kansas child welfare system with adoption as a goal.
- Data focused on children removed from their homes and placed in out-of-home care.
Main Results:
- African American children consistently experienced longer durations to reach key adoption milestones.
- This included delays in both adoption placement and finalization.
- African American children were over-represented from abuse reports to adoption.
Conclusions:
- Disparities in adoption timelines exist for African American children in the child welfare system.
- Further research is recommended in other states to determine the generalizability of these findings.
- Investigating contributing social, psychological, cultural, and systemic factors is crucial.
- Developing and evaluating targeted interventions for African American children is urgently needed.
Objective:
This article focuses on the path to adoption for children involved in the public child welfare system.
Method:
Descriptive and event history analyses were conducted of 1,550 children who had been removed from their homes and placed in out of home care in the child welfare system in Kansas and have adoption as a goal.
Results:
African American children consistently took longer to reach significant milestones, including adoption placement and finalization.
Conclusion:
African American children are over-represented throughout the progression from substantiated abuse to adoption. Future research in other states should focus on whether this trend is unique to Kansas or applicable in other states. Additionally, efforts should be devoted to investigating the social, psychological, cultural, and systemic factors contributing to this differential treatment. Finally, there is a dire need to develop and evaluate interventions targeted at meeting the specialized needs of African American children in this system.

Authoritarian Parenting
This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably.
