Chronic urticaria (CU) is significantly linked to thyroid autoimmunity in both known-cause and idiopathic cases. Screening for thyroid issues is recommended for all CU patients to identify those needing treatment or monitoring.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Chronic urticaria (CU) classification includes autoimmune subtypes linked to thyroid autoimmunity and anti-IgE antibodies.
  • Previous studies show varying frequencies of thyroid autoimmunity association with CU.
  • The role of autoimmune phenomena in idiopathic CU requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of thyroid antibodies (anti-thyroid peroxidase, thyroglobulin, TSH-receptor) in patients with known-cause CU and idiopathic CU.
  • To assess the association between CU and thyroid autoimmunity.
  • To evaluate the need for thyroid screening in CU patients.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO, TG, TSH-R) in two groups of CU patients: known cause (Group A, 70 cases) and idiopathic (Group B, 52 cases).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessment of thyroid disease and serum TSH levels in antibody-positive patients.
  • Statistical comparison of antibody prevalence between the two groups.
  • Main Results:

    • Thyroid antibodies were detected in 33% of Group A and 23% of Group B patients, a non-statistically significant difference.
    • Thyroid disease or altered TSH levels requiring treatment were found in 39% of seropositive Group A patients and 42% of seropositive Group B patients.
    • Chronic urticaria, regardless of cause, is more common in females and significantly associated with thyroid autoimmunity.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic urticaria, both known-cause and idiopathic, is significantly associated with thyroid autoimmunity.
    • Screening for thyroid autoimmunity and function is recommended for all CU patients.
    • Early identification of thyroid dysfunction in CU patients can guide appropriate treatment and follow-up.
