Summary

Recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) is linked to immune system dysfunction, with lower B- and T-lymphocyte counts and reduced natural killer (NK) cell activity observed in patients. Neutrophil functions like migration and ingestion are also impaired in RAU patients.

Background:

  • Recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) is a common oral condition with unclear etiology.
  • Immune system dysregulation is suspected in the pathogenesis of RAU.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate immunophenotypes and effector functions of immune cells in patients with RAU.
  • To compare immune parameters between acute RAU, remission RAU, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Peripheral blood lymphocytes immunophenotyping (CD19, CD3, CD4, CD8).
  • Assessment of polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocyte (PMN) functions: spontaneous migration, ingestion, digestion, and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC).
  • Measurement of natural killer (NK) cell activity.
