Summary

Exposure to biomass smoke from cooking stoves is linked to tuberculosis (TB). This study found a significant association, suggesting biomass smoke may play a causal role in TB development.

Background:

  • Indoor air pollution from biomass fuels is a global health concern.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading infectious disease, particularly in low-resource settings.
  • Previous studies have suggested a link between biomass fuel use and respiratory illnesses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between domestic biomass smoke exposure and tuberculosis.
  • To determine if biomass stove use is a risk factor for developing tuberculosis.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted with 288 tuberculosis patients (cases) and 545 patients with other ailments (controls).
  • Exposure to biomass smoke was assessed by self-reported history of cooking with traditional wood stoves.

    • Public health interventions targeting indoor air quality may help reduce the burden of tuberculosis.
