Summary

Routine preoperative cystoscopy for radical prostatectomy candidates rarely yields significant findings. This study found that routine cystoscopy impacted treatment in less than 1% of patients, questioning its cost-effectiveness.

  • To assess the impact of incidental cystoscopic findings on treatment decisions.

  • Retrospective review of 225 patients with organ-confined prostate carcinoma.
  • Rigid cystoscopy performed preoperatively.

Main Results:

  • Significant findings in 3 (1.3%) patients: bladder stone, bladder tumor, and urethral polyp with adenocarcinoma.
  • None of the 3 patients had hematuria suggesting these findings.
