Summary

Background:

  • Nasal polyps (NP) are benign growths in the nasal cavity.
  • The role of free radical (FR) injury in NP pathogenesis is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of free radical injury in nasal polyp tissue.
  • To quantify malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as a marker of oxidative stress in NP.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 19 patients with nasal polyps.
  • Control specimens from 16 patients without sinonasal inflammatory conditions.
  • MDA levels measured using the Knudsen et al. method.

Main Results:

  • Mean MDA levels were significantly higher in nasal polyp specimens (38.2 ± 5.1) compared to control specimens (33.9 ± 1.6).
