    Summary

    Interleukin (IL) levels in chronic viral hepatitis vary by cause, activity, and stage. Higher IL concentrations, particularly TNF-alpha and IL-4, are linked to severe disease, especially in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and cirrhosis.

    • Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and IL-4 showed more frequent and higher elevations compared to IL-6 and IL-1 beta.

    Conclusions:

    • Interleukin profiles are indicative of the specific etiological agent and disease progression in chronic viral hepatitis.
    • Elevated TNF-alpha and IL-4 are significant markers, particularly in advanced stages and severe forms of chronic hepatitis, such as CHC with cirrhosis.
