Area of Science:

  • Forestry science
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Resource management

Background:

  • Canada's current National Forest Inventory (NFI) is a periodic compilation lacking change detection and forecasting capabilities.
  • The existing NFI, based on inventories of different dates, cannot accurately reflect the current forest state or serve as a baseline for change monitoring.
  • The current NFI format has fulfilled its purpose for national reporting but is becoming obsolete.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a new National Forest Inventory design for Canada.
  • To enable timely and accurate assessment and monitoring of forest extent, state, and sustainability.
  • To discuss a strategy for a National Forest Information System to meet reporting commitments.

Main Methods:

  • Designing a new NFI based on a plot-based system with permanent observational units.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Establishing a national grid for locating these observational units.
  • Developing a National Forest Information System.
  • Main Results:

    • The proposed plot-based system will allow for continuous monitoring and assessment of forest resources.
    • The new design will provide data for analyzing the nature and rate of changes in Canada's forests.
    • It will enable accurate projections and forecasts regarding forest resources.

    Conclusions:

    • The current NFI is insufficient for modern forest management and monitoring needs.
    • A new plot-based NFI is essential for assessing and monitoring forest extent, state, and sustainability.
    • The proposed National Forest Information System will support national and international reporting requirements.
