Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Annuloaortic ectasia (AAE) is a rare condition characterized by idiopathic dilation of the aortic root.
  • It typically leads to pure aortic regurgitation (AR) and is often associated with Marfan syndrome.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of rapid-onset heart failure.
  • The patient was initially diagnosed with and treated for mitral regurgitation secondary to dilated cardiomyopathy.

Findings:

  • Postmortem examination revealed an enlarged heart.
  • Annuloaortic ectasia was identified as the underlying cause of the patient's condition.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering AAE in patients presenting with heart failure and aortic regurgitation, even when other diagnoses are suspected.
  • Accurate diagnosis of AAE is crucial for appropriate management and understanding of cardiovascular disease progression.
