Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Congenital Anomalies

Background:

  • Multiseptate gallbladder is an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly characterized by internal septations.
  • This condition often remains asymptomatic, presenting a diagnostic challenge.

Observation:

  • Three cases of surgically treated multiseptate gallbladder were analyzed.
  • The gallbladders exhibited multiple thin septa, creating a honeycomb appearance.
  • Histological examination revealed septa with muscular layers continuous with the gallbladder wall.

Findings:

  • One patient, a 70-year-old male, presented asymptomatically with multiseptate gallbladder and concurrent gallbladder carcinoma.
  • The carcinoma was identified as a mucinous cystadenoma with focal carcinomatous changes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This represents the first reported instance of gallbladder carcinoma associated with a multiseptate gallbladder.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights a potential, previously undescribed association between multiseptate gallbladder and gallbladder malignancy.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis and clinical significance of this association.
    • Awareness of this rare anomaly and its potential link to cancer may aid in early diagnosis and management.
