Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between occupational activities, particularly farming, and the incidence of strongyloidiasis.
  • To identify specific risk factors associated with Strongyloides stercoralis infection in the studied population.

Main Methods:

  • A paired case-control study was conducted between October 1997 and October 1999.
  • Diagnosis of strongyloidiasis was confirmed by observing Strongyloides stercoralis in serial fecal samples in individuals with eosinophilia.
  • Controls were matched for age and sex, with no eosinophilia and negative fecal samples for the parasite.

  • Occupational exposure in ricefields is a significant risk factor for strongyloidiasis in the Safor region.
  • Chronic pruritus is strongly associated with chronic strongyloidiasis, suggesting its utility as a diagnostic indicator.
