Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease.
  • It involves inflammation and fibrosis of intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts.
  • PSC can lead to bile duct loss, impaired bile flow, and biliary cirrhosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To understand the pathogenetic mechanisms of PSC.
  • To explore ongoing clinical trials for new therapeutic agents.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature on PSC.
  • Analysis of ongoing research and clinical trial data.

Main Results:

  • PSC is a significant cause of liver transplantation.
  • No universally beneficial therapy currently exists for PSC patients.

Conclusions:

  • Further research is crucial for understanding PSC.
  • Development of novel therapeutic strategies is an active area of investigation.
