[Determining when a person is dead]

The man-in-the-street's idea of death is centred around the cessation of respiratory and cardiac function. Both these functions can be artificially maintained and the question may then arise as to whether a patient is dead or alive. Certain criteria of death are discussed, and stress is laid on the fact that doctors concerned with declaration of death must never be concerned or involved in organ transplantation.
