Genomic analysis reveals distinct chromosomal imbalances between multiple myeloma (MM) and plasma cell leukemia (PCL). These differences, particularly in chromosomal losses, may help differentiate these plasma cell disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare the genomic alterations in MM and PCL using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH).

Main Methods:

  • CGH analysis was performed on 30 patients (25 MM, 5 PCL).
  • Plasma cell enrichment using immunomagnetic beads was employed in cases with low plasma cell counts.

Main Results:

  • DNA copy number changes were detected in 96% of MM and 100% of PCL patients.
  • Recurrent gains in MM included chromosomes 15q, 11q, 3q, 9q, and 1q.
