Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Medical abortion offers a less invasive option for pregnancy termination.
  • Self-administration of medications requires clear efficacy and safety data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of self-administered 1000 microg vaginal misoprostol (Cytotec) for medical abortion.
  • To evaluate outcomes including abortion success, side effects, and duration of bleeding.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 300 women with gestations between 42 and 63 days.
  • Vaginal misoprostol (1000 microg) administered every 24 hours, up to three doses.
  • Assessment of successful abortion, hemoglobin levels, bleeding duration, expulsion time, and return of menses.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • A 93.0% (279/300) success rate for complete abortion without surgery.
  • Statistically significant but clinically irrelevant decrease in hemoglobin.
  • High frequencies of nausea and diarrhea were observed.
  • Mean vaginal bleeding duration was 14.7 days; mean expulsion time was 8.1 hours.

Conclusions:

  • 1000 microg vaginal misoprostol is a potentially valid method for terminating pregnancies up to nine weeks gestation.
  • The regimen demonstrated high efficacy with manageable side effects.
