Insights

Type III paraesophageal hernia with intrathoracic stomach is rare in children. Laparoscopic retrieval of the stomach and a Thai antireflux procedure were successfully performed in two pediatric cases.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric surgery
  • Gastrointestinal surgery

Background:

  • Type III paraesophageal hernia, characterized by the stomach's presence in the thorax, is uncommon in pediatric populations.
  • This condition poses unique diagnostic and management challenges in children.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric patients presented with large Type III paraesophageal hernias.
  • Both patients exhibited significant intrathoracic stomach displacement.

Findings:

  • Laparoscopic surgical techniques were employed for the retrieval of the stomach from the thoracic cavity.
  • The procedures were successfully completed with the addition of a Thai antireflux procedure.

Implications:

  • This case series demonstrates the feasibility and efficacy of minimally invasive surgery for Type III paraesophageal hernia in children.
  • The findings support the use of laparoscopic approaches and the Thai antireflux procedure for managing this rare pediatric condition.
