Operative dentistry: an alternative to orthodontics.

    Summary

Operative Dentistry offers a viable, conservative alternative to orthodontics for treating dento-alveolar disproportion, particularly in resource-limited tropical settings. This case study demonstrates a successful, affordable treatment for diastema using resin veneers and a composite pontic.

    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Operative Dentistry
    • Restorative Dentistry

    Background:

    • Dento-alveolar disproportion presents treatment challenges, especially in impoverished tropical environments.
    • Orthodontic treatment is often inaccessible due to cost barriers for certain populations.
    • Atypical tongue posture during swallowing can contribute to dental malocclusions like diastema.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with a diastema between teeth 24 and 25, referred due to the inability to afford orthodontic treatment.
    • The proposed treatment involved a conservative approach using composite resin materials.

    Findings:

    • A bridge was constructed using two resin veneers and a pontic, bonded with composite (Tetric Ceram).
    • Minimal tooth reduction (0.5 mm) was performed on the lingual and proximal surfaces of the abutment teeth.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The procedure yielded satisfactory aesthetic and functional results, addressing the patient's specific needs.
  • Implications:

    • Operative Dentistry provides a practical and cost-effective alternative to orthodontics for specific cases of dento-alveolar disproportion.
    • This approach is particularly relevant in underserved populations with limited access to advanced dental care.
    • Conservative restorative techniques can achieve predictable outcomes in managing complex dental anomalies.
