Background:

  • Erectile function relies on the structural integrity of penile cavernosal tissues, including smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, elastic fibers, and collagen.
  • Hypercholesterolemia, a condition of elevated cholesterol levels, is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and may impact vascular and tissue structures throughout the body.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the ultrastructural effects of experimental hypercholesterolemia on key penile tissues essential for erection.
  • To assess the reversibility of these changes after cholesterol levels are normalized.

Main Methods:

  • New Zealand white rabbits were assigned to control, hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol diet for 8 weeks), or reversibility (high cholesterol diet followed by standard diet) groups.

    • Despite temporary structural alterations, hypercholesterolemia may not necessarily lead to permanent impairment of erectile function in this model.
