Summary

Uneventful cataract surgery significantly increased epiretinal membrane (ERM) prevalence by 71.4% within six months. While ERMs rarely impact visual acuity, they can cause visual disturbances like metamorphopsia post-surgery.

  • ERM presence defined by cellophane macular reflex (CMR) or macular pucker (MP).
  • Main Results:

    • ERM prevalence increased from 14.8% preoperatively to 25.3% at 6 months post-surgery (P <.001).
    • All new ERMs were of the CMR type; macular pucker remained infrequent.
    • While visual acuity was rarely affected, metamorphopsia occurred in 50% of MP and 18.1% of CMR cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Uneventful ECCE with PC IOL implantation significantly increases ERM prevalence within 6 months.
    • Newly formed ERMs, likely induced by surgery, typically do not compromise visual acuity.
    • Postoperative metamorphopsia can occur in patients with newly developed ERMs.
