    Background:

    • Dietary calcium intake is a critical determinant of calcium balance.
    • Understanding the relationship between calcium intake and absorption is essential for nutritional recommendations.
    • Previous studies suggest an inverse relationship between calcium absorption efficiency and intake.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively evaluate the relationship between ingested calcium and absorbed calcium in adult humans.
    • To determine if an upper limit to calcium absorption capacity exists.
    • To describe the absorption kinetics mathematically.

    Main Methods:

    • Absorption was assessed in 180 adult humans using concurrently administered oral and intravenous calcium isotopes.
    • Calcium intake ranged from 0.163 to 7.48 grams per day.
    • A mathematical model was developed to describe the absorption-intake relationship.

    Main Results:

    • Calcium absorption (Ca Abs) followed a curvilinear relationship with intake (Ca-D), described by a specific equation.
    • The contribution of an exponential absorption component diminished at higher intakes (above 0.8 Gm/day).
    • Above 2-3 Gm/day, absorption became a linear function of intake, with no detectable upper limit observed.
