Background:

Laparoscopic surgery is a rapidly growing surgical field with increasing applications.
Older patients increasingly present with conditions suitable for laparoscopic intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the current role and considerations of laparoscopic surgery in older patients.
To analyze the benefits and potential risks of laparoscopic procedures in the geriatric population.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review and analysis of English-language literature.
Focus on studies concerning laparoscopic procedures in geriatric patients.

Main Results:

Laparoscopic surgery provides benefits such as smaller scars, reduced postoperative pain, and quicker return to activity.
Physiologic stresses of laparoscopy and delayed interventions in older adults may alter surgical risk and the risk-benefit ratio.

Conclusions:

Laparoscopic approaches should be considered for all patients, irrespective of age.
Further elucidation of risk profiles for geriatric patients undergoing laparoscopy is needed.
