Summary

A rare congenital malformation involving pulmonary sequestration and an esophageal bronchogenic cyst was diagnosed in a 35-year-old patient. Surgical resection of both anomalies was successfully performed.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Congenital Malformations

Background:

  • Congenital lung malformations can present with complex anatomical variations.
  • Accurate pre-operative diagnosis of rare thoraco-abdominal anomalies is challenging.

Observation:

  • A 35-year-old patient presented with asymptomatic extralobar pulmonary sequestration.
  • The sequestration communicated with an esophageal bronchogenic cyst via the aortopulmonary window.
  • Associated findings included dextroisomerism and complete left pericardial agenesis.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) failed to establish a definitive diagnosis.
  • Left thoracotomy was required for diagnosis and surgical planning.
  • Complete resection of the sequestrated lobe and bronchogenic cyst was achieved.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare congenital anomaly requiring surgical intervention.
  • Advanced imaging may not always suffice for diagnosing complex thoraco-abdominal malformations.
  • Successful surgical management underscores the importance of thoracotomy for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
